Appearance: Thin and pale, but not unattractive.
Louche: Good color, but also thin. Could use more anethol.
Aroma: Very nice wormwood aroma balanced with a hint of anise.
Flavor: Rooty with just a hint of wormwood and anise. Not a bad flavor, but I kept sipping, hoping to taste more. It's thin, even at 2:1.
Finish: Again, I can't keep from mentioning thinness. Watered down anise with a bit of spiciness.
Overall: Very basic, but shows promise. Quality ingredients are obviously there, but everything seems to be used sparingly. I don't think this could be used in a cocktail, as there really wouldn't be much flavor coming through, so keep this one strictly for the normal preparation.

A nice affordable absinthe

I never had the original, but this appears to be improved greatly over it, from what I'm hearing from people who've had both.
Sampled 2.5:1, 3:1 with no sugar. Higher is inappropriate for the absinthe, as it's ABV is 45, and it would simply be too weak and thin. It is lightly bitter, but there is enough sweetness in this for me as is. Some might like this more with sugar.
Color: a natural light green with a bit of yellow, just a tad thin for my eye.
Louche: The louche is a bit thin, but not overly so, and is ample for this absinthe.
It is complete by 2:1 with a slow ice-cold slow drip. It's opalescent, but just a tad too thin to be ideal for me. I'm giving it a 4 here, as I feel it works with this absinthe, and a 3 would be too low.
Aroma: Quite nice. Herbs, hints of flowers and plenty of wormwood.
Flavor: I like this, and find it has a very decent wormwood-forward personality. It is not terribly complex, but it is tasty enough that I reach for the bottle from time to time, and enjoy the glass.
Finish: A decent finish, just not remarkable. It recedes fairly quickly, but nothing jumps out in a bad way at all. I enjoy the flavor in the finish...a nice wormwood presence.
Overall: This is a good choice for casual drinking, as it is a full liter for a very good price. I would share this with friends for an afternoon drink, and for a nice glass at night just to relax. It would be a nice choice for a large party as well, due to its size. This absinthe has a place on the shelf for me as a casual enjoyable absinthe. If you are ordering from Europe, this might be a good choice to pad the total to a free-shipping level.

Un Emile is an absinthe which debuted a few years ago to generally low-to-middle reviews. The recipe has been reformulated recently, and has just now hit the market. I was fortunate enough to have gotten a bottle as a gift with purchase at the end of February, and I wasn't sure what to expect.
To start with, the fragrance and taste are strong with what seems like a mix of extra hyssop and perhaps a little lavender, but as I'm not certain about the particulars, only that it is very meadowlike without being the least bit grassy. The color is a little bit thin, having too much yellow, but it's not bad.
I tried the drink first at a ratio of 4.5:1, but realized that was too far too much water. When I tried it again at 2.5:1 and 3:1 though, this absinthe really shined. I think folks who like the powerful aroma of Berthe de Joux will enjoy this one, as the Un Emile 45 also has a strong (but more herbal and less floral) scent, and tastes best with a reduced water-to-absinthe ratio. Regardless of the amount of water used, the louche is a bit oily and unspectacular.

Although it has an unusual profile and would never be a daily drink for me, this would be welcome as a first absinthe of the day on a hot summer afternoon (not least because the finish doesn't last very long, and as such keeps your palate ready for the next drink).
While I wouldn't recommend this one as a benchmark absinthe for someone new, Un Emile is a fine treat for the right occasion and a very good bargain for the price.
