According to the distiller: "The La Valote available in the US is a mix between 2 products. For the US, Francis Martin made an absinthe a little bit different from his Swiss Absinthe (La Valote Martin). I did the same and we mixed the 2 products."

Color: Clear, no visible sediment. Disclosure: For blanches, if there are no visible defects, I give a 4 instead of a 5. I only reserve a 5 score for perfectly colored Vertes, as it's more difficult to achieve and I like to reward that.

Louche: Nice layering. Quick to start. Fully louched by about 1:1. The final color is attractive and opaque, but not as deep as something like CLB.

Aroma: Sweet and light with some earthiness. A typical blanche aroma, but a bit more muted than some.

Flavor: Well balanced but fairly light in flavor. There is a nice spiciness towards the end.

Finish: Not a lot of anise or wormwood, but the spice stays around for a little while. I'd like the flavor to hang around longer.

Overall: Not a bad drink at all, yet a bit basic. It's a little to lightly flavored for me. The only thing I really pick up is the spiciness. Everything else is pretty muted. Price point is coming in around $50, which makes this a good buy.

La Valote has a fine clarity and color, with only a slight amount of haziness. Unfortunately, it also has a pungent odor that I don’t care for. The scent of grassiness (or even earthiness, as BR suggests above) is overwhelming to me prior to loucheing, although it thankfully calms down almost completely with watering.

The louche was present and well-defined without being either oily or milky, but it was over very quickly.

La Valote's taste, while acceptible, is that of a simple, “stripped down” bitterness. It was not unpleasant, but it was unremarkable. This absinthe is also easily overwatered, so be careful with your ratios (I found that 4:1 was as far as it could go). The finish was sound, but very short to the point of hardly being there, barely eking out a 3 in this category.

Overall, La Valote is a decent, drinkable absinthe which could use some significant tweaking in its formulation.
