This was the first iteration of Wild Card absinthe, that was available through mid-2014.

Appearance: Very very very light. A tinge of yellow, but that's about it. At first glance, you'd think it's a flawed blanche.

Louche: Extremely thin louche. At the bottom of the glass, it's practically transparent.

Aroma: Slightly minty. Undertones of anise. Wormwood is the dominant aroma, but it needs more supporting characters.

Flavor: Thin mouthfeel. Nice spiciness from the wormwood but little else. Needs a lot more anise and fennel. The wormwood is good quality, it just needs more of everything. This would be more enjoyable as a wormwood schnapps.

Finish: Fleeting. Some spice from the wormwood and just a hint of anise, it just recedes quite quickly.

Overall: A decent first try. Nothing glaringly wrong, just thin. I think they were a bit too hesitant to go full-on with the herb bill their first go round. If they up the herbal punch, this could be quite enjoyable.

A good base, but needs a lot of work

Color
Very light peridot. Very pretty but one dimensional.

Louche
It takes quite a bit of time to start to louche out. You don't get that thick layer at the bottom, it just suddenly appears. Slightly oily on the top at first. By 2:1 its opaque. The color is very pale, opalescent when held to the light. Slightly blue on the edges. It wasn't anything really impressive to watch.

Aroma
It has a lovely nose. There was something in it that I couldn't place until I read further on their website. There is cardamom in it and it is quite present. Not overpowering but it provides an interesting detail. Anise, fennel and wormwood are present both neat and louched. The fennel backs the cardamom very nicely.

Flavor

First on the palette is anise and the cardamom. It gives way to a sweet middle and drops off very quickly. Slightly minty but refreshing.

Finish

It doesn't last long. Slight numbing but very little. It makes me wish there was more to the finish.

Overall

This is a decent bottle to have on the shelf to introduce people to absinthe with. It's reasonably priced and the addition of the cardamom appeals to me. I think it could use a few tweaks to make it great. I found the best ratio to be 3.5:1 with VERY little sugar.

A new card trick

Color
