Arak, Raki, Ouzo, Pastis, Sambuca, etc.

Anyone a fan of any of these other anise based spirits?

Any you'd recommend?

Oh, one thing I forgot to ask. Has anyone ever tried one that could stand up to a good absinthe?

I've enjoyed Sambuca with coffee as an after-dinner drink occasionally.

El Massaya Arak from Lebanon is excellent.

The room it smelled heavy of drinkin',
and the sad silent song made the hour twice as long,
as I waited for that sun to go sinkin'.

Indeed!

Yes, I'm Krinkles the Clown on an absinthe a beer bender.

You got a problem with that?

What they said.

I would rather drink a top shelf arak than a so so absinthe.

I'm a big fan of pastis. The best I've had is Henri Bardouin, which has a lot more floral and complex flavor than the classic Ricard. I go through 3 - 4 bottles of HB per year, actually. For simpler pastis I tend to prefer Berger to Ricard, though the difference is minor.

I enjoy the flavor of arak but all the kinds I have tried give me a wicked headache very quickly, so I tend to stay clear.
