Greetings from SoCal

Recommended Posts

Greetings, been lurking here and drinking Absinthe for about a year now and figured I might as well make some posts. I'm really glad I found this place because it's really helped me find what to avoid and know what to look for in Absinthes.

My interest in Absinthe started after watching

. From the look of the distiller I thought I was going to get a kick out of watcing some hipster doing something just to be different. Instead I saw a man who is super passionate about something and that really intrigued me.

So by chance a few days later, when I was at my brother's house, his girlfriend happened to have some Absente and I had to try it. At the time it tasted great and there were enough "WITH WORMWOOD" labels on the bottle to convince me it was the real deal, so I got my own bottle. About halfway through that bottle I found this place and got a bottle of St. George and found how completely dishonest Absente is.

Throughout this past year I've tried quite a few different brands based on the info gathered from this site, and I try my hardest to educate anyone else I encounter.

Brands I've had in a rough order:

Absente

St George

La Clandestine

Vieux Pontarlier

Vieux Carre

Ridge Verte (was surprised to see this in a Bevmo)

La Valote Blanche

I've also got a bottle of Jade PF 1901 on the way, saw it was on sale from Drinkupny and had to get it.

I've found the local Total Wines and Bevmos around here actually have a decent selection of good brands on top of the usual faux offerings. If you happen to be in Costa Mesa though definitely check out Hi-Time Wine Cellars they have a great selection.

Amen brother. I started with Absente as well, then I got here. Without the WS, I may have continued to think that it and Lucid were all there was.

And, holà.

Welcome from another Californian (albeit from the north).

I guess I'm lucky I never got stuck with any crapsinthes. The worst I was exposed to in the beginning was the previous version of Pernod, with its neon artificial coloring. (Okay, maybe that pushes it toward the crapsinthe category...)

You're going to love PF1901.

Agreed. I saw this for myself when I was there in May last year. Now if only there was that kind of selection in a few more bars in the area.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, the Jade 1901 was amazing. The only thing I've had that compares in balance of flavors is Ridge Verte.
