Hello All,

This is a reintroduction of sorts.  I was a member of this forum in the middle of the 2000-oughts when I lived in California.  in 2006 I moved to Beijing China for work and sadly, ended up not on this site as much and worse, not really drinking absinthe.  Now I live in Dar es Salaam Tanzania and am a teacher at an international school here.  I am sure my old account has been removed due to lack of activity so I have signed up with a new one.

My interest in absinthe was reignited a couple of weeks ago when my wife found a half full bottle of Jade Nouvelle-Orléans that I had brought with me from California to China and carefully rationed while I was there but then somehow forgot about it.  It was miraculously and unknowingly moved with us to Tanzania and discovered by her as we ready our house here to move back home to the States in June.

I enjoyed my first glass of absinthe in years under the beautiful tropical foliage of our backyard and now I remember what I love about absinthe so much.  Now I have a lot of time to make up sampling all amazing new brands and bottles available since 2006.  It’s good to be back on this forum and I look forward to enjoying and discussing this amazing beverage with you all.  Now the trick is getting a couple bottles sent to me here in Tanzania to tide me over til June.  I have been in contact with Ian at LDF by email and he has indicated it might be possible to send some here, but any other thoughts or advice on that is greatly appreciated.  Anyone from South Africa know about buying in this area?

Best regards,

Nice to meet ya.
The room it smelled heavy of drinkin',
and the sad silent song made the hour twice as long,
as I waited for that sun to go sinkin'.

You got a problem with that?

Thanks, everyone!  It is great to be back.  Like I said, it's been awhile and it seems like there are a lot of great new brands to try out, so who can point me toward the new ones that have the highest legal amounts of thujone?  And any recommendations on a good set of matches to light the sugar on fire?  Kidding!  I know way, way better than this and do appreciate me a properly poured and prepared fine absinthe.  It's funny (and sad), I have been telling some people I know here about my find and the reaction tends to be the same - "is that the drug drink?"  "It makes you see things, right?"  Ugh.  I'll just educate them here one at a time.

Excited though because Absinthe Classics is shipping me a bottle to Tanzania... we only found 1/2 a bottle here, so you have to be sure to have a more steady supply than that, right?

My favorite one recently:

"One glass of absinthe, no sugar"

<bartender hands me shot of absinthe in a big glass>

"Umm...can I get some water for this?"

"Oh, you still put water in it if you're not using sugar?"

Perhaps not having absinthe served up at our local bars here with unenlightened bartenders aint a bad thing!
