The book is a biography of Norma Wallace, the last woman to run a brothel in the French Quarter. A great read. This scene took place in the 1930's, long after the ban.
Every night after the show Phil and his band would head to Norma's where they'd fix big pitchers of absinthe...tell jokes and play music. Phil wrote a song for Norma called "Queens Drink Absinthe in New Orleans."
