A brief excerpt from The Last Madam by Christine Wiltz:

Every night after the show Phil and his band would head to Norma's where they'd fix big pitchers of absinthe...tell jokes and play music. Phil wrote a song for Norma called "Queens Drink Absinthe in New Orleans."

The book is a biography of Norma Wallace, the last woman to run a brothel in the French Quarter. A great read. This scene took place in the 1930's, long after the ban.
"Is it true that the people of Paris are always laughing?"

"Yes, but it is with anger in their hearts. They express all their complaints with loud bursts of laughter, and commit the most detestable crimes with a smile on their faces."

This should have been an early "Who" hit instead of "Pictures of Lily".

Yes, I'm Krinkles the Clown on an absinthe a beer bender.

You got a problem with that?
