Greetings everyone!

I'm Christopher, a college student studying communications and fraternity (which is where I got the "squirrel" nickname). I also write for the university paper as the news editor, which is the field I want to go into after graduation.

I'd like to start by saying I'm a Scotch guy. I love Speyside single malts, and Scotch is where I've gotten most of my drinking experience from. While Scotch is what I go to for taste, I drink cheap beer and cheap rum for everything else.

My first run-in with absinthe was Staroplzenecky about two years ago. You know, fake stuff. One of my fraternity brothers had maybe 1/2 an oz. of it and he was moving out, so we both took sips of it neat. I have no idea what it tasted like, so at this point I might as well have never had any absinthe at all. Unfortunately, there aren't that many liquor stores near me (near Atlanta) that have a good selection of absinthe. Lucid is at like all of them, but I'm debating whether I want to get it, knowing that it's middle shelf, or whether I should just get the ABSINTHEXPLORE and pick a few to sample first.

Oh decisions!

Anyways, I love the website, and I've already learned so much from it! I look forward to starting this new journey with you all!

Lucid is a fine starting point for absinthe.  It is real absinthe and while not terribly complex, still fairly tasty.  While your Scotch background may aid you, starting out at top dollar absinthe is perhaps not the best investment on this new adventure.

Oh yes, Welcome to the Forum.

Welcome!  Don't let Lucid's middle shelfness deter you.  I view it the same way as Scotch: as a beginner, you might not want to go for the Lagavulin 16 or Octomore, because you likely won't be able to appreciate all of the nuances of such complex versions.  Starting with a good middle range brand will introduce you to the flavors and get your palate accustomed to the nuances before you explore the deeper complexities of the better brands.

Welcome! Yeah - if Lucid is available - you can do much, much worse. Also, since this is Christmastime - Lucid is often sold as a gift set with a glass or two, spoon, dripper, or other neat tools for the same price

I actually went and got a bottle of Vieux Carre yesterday. It definitely wasn't what I expected; it was good, just different. I think I might have used a bit too much water for me (I did 4 parts water). I'm going to spend the next few days playing around with water/sugar and see what tastes best.
