And by "I don't have any good glasses", I meant I only have cups with handles and designs on them.

I don't have any clear ones.

Forks work as a quick substitute for a slotted spoon and most grocery stores should stock sugar cubes in the baking aisle. Mugs do a fair job of containing liquid, but maybe a water glass is around somewhere?

Absinthe doesn't require lots of fancy stuff, even though the fancy stuff is pretty cool.

Grande Absente has a review page if you are wondering how it ranks.

My $.02,
Give the Absente as a gift to someone who prefers quantity over quality. Thank providence for not letting it touch your lips.
Use a regular water goblet or glass for now, move onto something from La Rochere later.
Screw the spoon and sugar, unless you are a sweet tooth. Most drink with out sugar, plenty drink with, it's just a preference.
Go to our review section and read up on real absinthe brands. At least look locally for Pacifique, Duplais, Vieux Carre, Ridge, and as a last resort, Lucid. We poke fun at it, but Lucid is a solid offering of real absinthe with a nice and proper louche.

Omg. It's not THAT terrible. Forget the spoons, forget the sugar. Just add water and enjoy. Absinthe snobbery be damned.

The room it smelled heavy of drinkin',

and the sad silent song, made the hour twice as long,

as I waited for that sun to go sinkin'.

My $.02,

Seems more like $1.02.

Most drink with out sugar, plenty drink with, it's just a preference.

my emphasis

That certainly doesn't square with this. Approximately 65% always or often use sugar, approximately 35% seldom or never use sugar. If I were asked the question Which qualifies as "most", 65% or 35%?, my answer would be 65%, but that's just me. And I agree with Songcatcher. It never hurts to have sampled a range of any type of product.

It's a dangerous place to be when one's "facts" are driven by one's personal preferences, opinions, and agenda.

I have an agenda? Most of the absinthe drinkers I know prefer sans sucre, although you are correct in saying that is not a scientific poll, but then neither is the one you quote. Sugar is a preference, not a requirement, so I don't know this agenda you speak of, unless you have one. I just see many noobs feel they have to have sugar, because of the popular image of absinthe, so I like to tell them that it is just a personal preference, kinda like coffee.

Well then let's get this more tightly focused.

Most drink with out sugar...

It's beyond me how you could even think I was taking issue with the "preference" part of the former quote if you paid any real attention to my response. I can only assume that the deflection is intentional.

Here is just another example of a "fact" that is not a fact.

... although you are correct in saying that is not a scientific poll,...

I never said that. This is like shooting fish in a barrel.

I have an agenda?

Everyone has an agenda. Most people have multiple agendas.

What evil and nefarious agenda do you think I'm after?

I actually have no idea what agendas you may have that are "evil and nefarious". I didn't suggest that. If you do have those and you want to talk about it, I'm all ears. However, I think you're far too focused on that term. My point was that none of those three things (personal preferences, opinions, or agenda) should ever alter what is factual and what is not. I'd really like to see newcomers, especially, have the benefit of good factual information rather than someone's spin on reality.

I walked into a welcome thread and stepped in some agenda. Still though, welcome Miss Laces. Sorry about the whole not-working-out thing.

At the Orvis website you can buy an adequate doormat to wipe that off your shoes, if you look to the right. If left is your preference, try Lands' End.

Welcome from another newcomer.

Curious- I'll be in Los Angeles in May (convention center/nokia theatre) - any bars or other venues you know of that serve absinthe?
