I actually waited a whole year to finally join this forum (I turned 21 on April of this year)!

I have not tried Absinthe BUT I will try it on Halloween with my partner. We are going to an Emilie Autumn concert.

Eventhough, I haven't had Absinthe, I love its history and that Edgar Allan Poe drank it. I love saying and writing Absinthe.

Anyway, my name is Crystal and I am from Los Angeles, CA but I'm going to move to Chicago, IL to be with my partner.

If you have any questions, please, feel free to ask!

Hi! :wave2:
Some folks may cringe each time I use the term "Booze" regarding these high quality drinks.
I mean no offense. There are bottles of extraordinary booze out there. I've tasted a few. Relax.

Nice to meet you, although I don't think EAP ever had absinthe.

The room it smelled heavy of drinkin',

and the sad silent song, made the hour twice as long,

as I waited for that sun to go sinkin'.

I love its history and that Edgar Allan Poe drank it.

There's actually no evidence that Poe ever drank absinthe. It's possible, but very unlikely.

Welcome (from another relative newcomer)!

You're lucky to be turning 21 now when there are actually a lot of decent absinthes available. If I'd tried to find any at that age (I'm 33 now) there wouldn't have been much other than horrible crap with instructions on the bottle for lighting it on fire, and even that wouldn't have been available in the US.

All that aside...not to be Ms. Unsolicited Advice-Giver, but if you haven't run across this bit of info already, you might want to keep it in mind...as far as enjoying the actual drink goes, if you tend to like licorice / anise flavors you'll probably love absinthe. If you HATE black jellybeans, etc., you'll probably think it's gross. Not to say that absinthe tastes exactly like black jellybeans...the actual flavor is much more complex than that, but still, as the stuff can be expensive, you definitely want to consider that before going in on a bottle with friends, etc.

I HATE black licorice and black jelly beans. Won't even kiss Mr Perfect if he's eating them.
I despise the taste of alcohol, won't even eat chocolate mousse if the flavor of the alcohol is noticeable.
I adore the flavor of most absinthe's that I've tasted so far.
Of course I have been very blessed to have the great folks at absinthe dot com to direct me to the great stuff.

Absinthe is licorice "like" in flavor, or "reminiscent of" ... it is definitely not the "same as"
An excellent adventure for myself and Mr Perfect who loves black licorice and black jellybeans.
As long as I avoid those brands that actually use licorice in their drinks, Mr Perfect and I look forward to a long and
blissful relationship with the Green Fairy.

Johanna: I actually did almost include a disclaimer that people like you exist (as in, those who like absinthe but despise anisey/licoricey flavors in general) but couldn't figure out how to articulate it, so thanks for providing a clear firsthand example. :) I've just noted some exceedingly strong negative reactions from some folks trying absinthe for the first time who apparently expected it to taste like lime dewdrops or something along those lines and had *no idea* that anise was even a component of its flavor profile. Hence the caveat.

Cheers and welcome Crystal  you are INDEED lucky to be trying Absinthe for the first time now! There has been somewhat of an Absinthe boom! Distilleries and awesome products have popped up like crazy!

As for Poe he was more of a Cognac man. It happens to be I am taking a literature of Edgar Allen Poe class! No doubt in my mind I will be reading Poe while enjoying a glass of Absinthe from time to time! :). It's cool you are trying it on All Hollow's Eve too :dev-cheers:

That's a nice and concise way of putting it. Some of the Badine (Star Anise) heavy absinthes can get licorice candy tasting. For the most part good producers use Green (Sweet) Anise, which I find lovely even on its own.

Hey.

You know how I said I was going to Chicago and all that stuff?

Yeaaaaah. I broke up with her and I still live in Los Angeles, CA.

And I just bought myself a bottle of Absinthe.

It's called Grande Absente.

Not ready to try it right now. Mainly because I don't have a sugarcube and I don't like the glasses I have and I don't have the right spoon.

I have the right music though :)

So, I'm going to be drinking alone.
