I came across this piece of research in a reference from a newspaper article. The research is now 12 years old, so forgive me if this has been discussed before (if so I couldn't find a thread).

 

In short the study looked at 24 neonates born to mothers who had or had not consumed anise flavour during pregnancy. Both groups of infants were followed-up for behavioural markers of attraction and aversion when exposed to anise odour and a control odour immediately after birth and on day 4. Infants born to anise-consuming mothers evinced a stable preference for anise odour over this period, whereas those born to anise non-consuming mothers displayed aversion or neutral responses.

 

So it suggests that a like or dislike for anise flavoured beverages is present at birth and that the liking of these beverages in certain areas is self-reinforcing. It would account for why, generally speaking, northern Europeans don't like aniseed and southern Europeans do. I am now off to develop aniseed flavoured milk formula in an attempt to prime the market in 18 years time...

My thoughts exactly, and it may be easier than you think. My wife (who grew up in Holland) turned me on to Anijs Melk, a big favorite among the Dutch.

I might agree with this to some degree just based on my own experience.

 

I come from Netherland heritage, and there are a lot of 'other' anise treats/foods in that culture-- sweets, drink, food. I have an affinity for them all.

 

True black liquorice flavor I detest entirely. Makes me freaking ill, 'fo real'.

I've liked anise all my life and my mom despises it. I'm told that her dad was a huge fan of anise and even made his own anise candy. I have other family members who can tolerate it, but none that will reach for the black jelly beans first. Maybe it's just a genetic thing as opposed to a direct correlation from mother to child?

 

Side note: I louched an absinthe with milk once. It wasn't as great as I was hoping it would be, but it wasn't terrible.

It's a anise flavored sugar block dissolved in warm milk. Really delicious!!!

My favorite sweet bread is anise heavy. And also molases heavy.

They are called Xecas, particularly the ones from Totonicapan.

I'll bet the mouth feel was down right creamy. :laugh: Kudos to your adventurous taste buds!

Interesting. I would guess that the fat and sugars in milk would overwhelm the more delicate aspects of the absinthe. Or you could do like Alan,

I see 'em, but it still could be unlouched absinthe in milk, for all I know. :laf:
