Just in case anyone is interested in anise flavor and French culture.

What's the big deal about a song that tells the tale of a young girl who goes to the candy store for anise flavored lollypops? Maybe more is going on perhaps?

"Les Sucettes" was, on the surface, a pleasant children's song about a girl who likes aniseed-flavoured lollipops. But Gainsbourg's lyric was full of playful double meanings referring to oral sex  , which Gall, aged 18, simply did not understand."

and lastly, a video clip from a 2001 documentary, France Gall tells the story here

An interesting look back to the world of 1966, early sexual revolution.

By today's standards, no way in hell would anyone believe an 18 year old not being "in" on the joke, and not understanding the double meanings.

Or, are parts of the story, still hard to,,, swallow?

Actually, in an era when children weren't exposed to blatant sexuality everywhere like they are now, it's not at all hard to believe that she was as innocent as she claims.

Exactly.

I think if you polled by age, maybe more people in there 20's or 30's would tend not believe her.

The mid 60's were just outside my age of personal experience, so I have to look at it like a historian and weigh the evidence. And it looks like every thing points to her not knowing.

So now to take a look at her producer/ songwriter Gainsbourg:
some would say exploitive sleezebag,
or was he an artist breaking new ground, testing the limits?
A little of both, I think.

I've noticed some of these threads can go downhill real fast

The room it smelled heavy of drinkin',

and the sad silent song, made the hour twice as long,

Reading up on it, sounds like the guy was a jerk. Not for writing the song, but for using the girl in such a trashy way.
