I found this website, showing pre-ban bottles and samples.

Anyone know anything about the webshop or the absinthe?

Yes. I've been in contact with the owner of the bottles over the past week or so. We were working on negotiating the sale of some of the bottles so I could break them up into samples for WS members.

But now the cat is out of the bag apparently.

Well, the sentence "All bottles seem to have been produced between 1840-1870 and are still sealed with the original corks, containing the oldest Absinthe we have ever tasted, quite unlike any other Absinthe currently on the market" is certainly tantalizing, but also vague.

Given that the estimated time-frame is obviously well before the ban, it doesn't appear that these would be clandestine absinthes, but based on the pictures it appears that these bottles never had labels at all (rather than having had labels which disintegrated over time). I'll be keeping an eye on this thread in case anyone posts some details!

That's about all of the details they have. Other experts seem to believe them to be legit, but I had him send me a sample, just to check out the quality before I asked around to gauge any initial interest in buying any. I plan to try it out this week, possibly tonight.

I admit to being a bit hesitant simply due to the lack of information, as well as not knowing the people selling them, but they came with several references that seem to check out.

The company selling these are based in the UK and they approached me several weeks ago via one of my important customers here. I agree with the comments above, and thought "Well, I don't know who would want a whole bottle, based on the fact that there is not much provenance here, but maybe a group of absinthe lovers would be interested." So I put them in touch with Brian with a view to him considering whether to split a bottle or more among members here.

I've not tasted the product and apart from a few emails don't know the vendor. I'm looking forward to reading Brian's thoughts after he's tasted it.

Spoke with them today and found out that the one bottle that shows as 'reserved' is the one that they are holding for us if we get enough interest in it.

Don't see nothing but a blank black page

The room it smelled heavy of drinkin',

and the sad silent song, made the hour twice as long,

as I waited for that sun to go sinkin'.

Hence the reason I wanted to get a bottle and split it up for everyone. That way it's less of a concern, and more affordable.

edit* (Brian beat me to it)

Love the Idea! I was skeptical of a few things, hence the reason of my original post.
I would not want to gamble, even the smaller cost of a totally unknown sample, from an unknown vendor.

If I calculated right it would be about 150 bucks (give or take) for a sample?

Probably about $135 to include packaging, buying the sample bottles, and the monkeys.

Brian sure is the master of suspense. I'm on a hitchcockian edge. Congrats on the move. I'm sure you have a long to-do-list and plenty of things to open, last of which is the bottle in question.

Review here.

I think I'm ready to buy the bottle. Anyone who is interested in purchasing a sample from the bottle, please email me (not PM, as my inbox is almost full and I haven't yet archived).
