It's also possible the writer meant exactly what he said, which points to the disgusting fact that people were familiar with the smell of a whole mattress full of crushed bed bugs - it's hard to believe there would be much of a smell from just one (the stink bug is a lot bigger, and releases the smell when crushed). Not as disgusting as a bed full of fleas carrying the plague, I guess.


But I still think he confused badiane with coriander somehow.
