Absinthe & Twitter

Recommended Posts

I wonder how many networking sites a human is able to cope with.

I my case, it seems to be one. Never really got to use LinkedIn, and I haven't really used my Myspace profile since Facebook came into the picture. I do not even dare to think about Twitter ... I think.

Oh, and hi, Johanna. Nice to see you around (from another slightly irregular poster).

Ditto, and such. I have accounts on Livejournal, MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn (even an old defunct acct on Friendster -- remember that one?), but have declined to sign up for Twitter and, truth be told, hardly ever sign in to any of the aforementioned others. Internet connectivity is a flawed concept, at best.

So say I, here on an internet forum.

Oh, to live in simpler times? Perhaps. But here is where we are, and given that I quite enjoy my life and the people in it, I won't regret the time period in which I live. The caliber of people who seem to inhabit the planet with me is another matter, but I won't get political here in such a lighthearted thread ;)

Sorry, this was supposed to be in the 'let the drunk posting begin' thread :laf:

Internet connectivity as such is far from being flawed, in my opinion ... without internet forums, I would never have had the unforgettable experience of getting drunk in remote parts of Switzerland and France with a bunch of 'murkins, locals and others, and I have actually met quite a few new people in my own city thanks to Facebook.

But in order to make it work, I can only cope with so many places to keep track on - otherwise, I would never have the time to make it to those real life activities that makes it worthwhile ...

Well hey, I'm glad to be proved wrong on that point, at least in your own personal experience. I suppose I've been jaded by too many friends and acquaintances who fall back on emails and blog posts in lieu of face-to-face visits and conversations, and that's without mentioning how many people use cellphones as a crutch to avoid face time as well. Maybe I should hang out with YOUR crowd.

The whole idea of using the internet to exclusively meet people "with similar interests" smacks of a rigid homogeneity that I don't want to foster, but I suppose that same pitfall has existed for centuries in different forms, and we all just have to find our own way to avoiding it.

Ah yes -- if you read my 12:06 post (particularly the

'So say I, here on an internet forum' line), you will see that the irony was not lost on me B)

If you want to hang out with (some of) "my" crowd, catch a plane to Switzerland this weekend ...

Alas, I won't be there myself.

Oh, by the way - you shouldn't quote the post directly about yours, unless there is a particular passage that you want to single out. I know there are other forums out there where they do it all the time, but here, it is generally considered a no-no. Rightly so, I'd say, it feels a bit as if someone repeats everything you say before replying.

I agree with Gertz about how many sites can be used at the same time by the same person. The idea of having a presence at all of those places has more to do with catching people who don't overlap, i.e. some use FB but not twitter.

Thanks, I have just added you. I see you weren't kidding after seeing the last update! Don't underestimate the potential of Facebook (or any other networking site) as a marketing tool. If you target the right people you can acquire some real momentum with not a lot of effort, all without shelling out a penny.

Awesome! The facebook just got a face lift and added RSS feeds, Flickr, Youtube, etc etc. We're getting back on top of our social media, cause you're very right when you said not to underestimate it as a marketing tool.

I hope you got yourself a shorter, punchier Facebook name last week.

I asked my brother about that, and he said that didn't apply to businesses. Either way, we still have the long long .. longgg facebook name. Boo.

Partly correct. "Only Pages with 1,000 fans as of 31 May 2009 are eligible for usernames."

Alternatively you can use another application like this to create an address for your page like www.fbook.me/Mutineer. Which is currently available ...

Where does it say your custom URL on the FB page? I made one with the fbook.me the day the program came out, then about a week later, there was a prompt on my Home page for what looked like another personalized URL offered directly from Facebook, not an app. Set both of them, but can't find either of them plainly listed. If you have to go into an app or account information to retrieve it that's just idiotic...Myspace has been doing it right for years, putting it clearly in plain sight on the Home page.

Of course, part of FB's failure is due in part to their narrow outlook initially in assuming people wouldn't want the full functionality of Myspace sooner or later. Being told you cannot even set an informal username to sign up was a massive, massive mistake.

Only a matter of time until Twitter exceeds them now...

It doesn't. Not until you hit refresh your profile page and then cut "?ref=profile"

FB page URLs usually seem to indicate both the page itself and how you got there. There must be a benefit or a reason for that, but I've no idea what it is.

The fbook.me application was apparently a good way to ambush Facebook's own plans: yes, you need to go to apps to find the address but it had the benefit of being available for pages with less than 1,000 fans (and not just for individual pages)

I'm still not 100% convinced by Twitter. Most people with a Twitter account use it very infrequently, and there's a lot of spam which is going to turn people off.

I don't ever see that happening but I do see myspace being put to rest.

And bands. It is the primary resource for bands. In fact, many have stopped having websites and just use MySpace now.

This is true, Peridot. Didn't think about that.

Well, I could be wrong. Hope they can regain momentum and get out of the slump they are in.

I definitely don't think FB will go the way of the Dodo though.

By the way, since we put the info about the WS on FB and Twitter on the main site, we're getting members joining all over the place!

FYI, 12 members added to the FB group today alone. We'll hit 100 total before the end of the day, I'm sure.
