If there's an "absinthe bar scene" in the Buffalo area, I don't know about it (but then, I'm married with 2 kids, so my "bar scene" days are mostly behind me). For that matter, I unfortunately don't really know any other enthusiasts around here either. (I'm trying to do my part to change that). However, we DO have a fairly good selection of absinthes at the Premier Group liquor stores. (Prime, Premium, & Prestige Wines & Spirits in the suburbs of Kenmore, Williamsville, & Orchard Park, respectively). Available brands are: Lucid; Kübler; St. George; La Fee; Pernod; Absente; Grande Absente; Mata Hari; La Muse Verte; Mythe; Mansinthe. (Incidentally, Premier also has a huge stock of almost any wine or liquor you can think of.)
I think, therefore I am. Or am I over-thinking? I am thinking it over...

Add Koruna to the list. (Wow, there sure is a LOT of sediment in that bottle...by "sediment", I mean leaves, stems, twigs, I think maybe some bark...)

Many WS members by Buffalo? I'm going near there next summer, so I may be tempted by "jumping" the border!

As far as I know, I'm it. PM me if you want, let me know where & when you'll be around. It'd be nice to drink a glass or two with another enthusiast.

FYI- the notorious "Evil Clown" is an ex-Buffalonian...you know what they say; you can take the boy out of Buffalo, but you can't take Buffalo out of the boy...(Oooh, sorry, Abs, that doesn't sound quite right)

It does in Buffalo. :harhar:

Damn, sometimes I really miss that town, even if Anacone's Inn and the Wurzburger Hof are defunct.

As long as Ulrich's Tavern and Flying Bison keeps on keepin' on, there's still hope for that battered, bruised shaggy beast.

Hi Sardonix and others;

Thanks for starting this Buffalo thread. We are lucky to have the Premier Group, and the Global and Passport groups are not far behind.

Part of the reason I "outed" myself on this board after more than a year of lurking, is that I just started bartending at a local Italian bistro, and in addition to a good selection of Italian bitters and amaros, they have Lucid, Kübler, and Pernod behind the bar. I am developing a craft bar program there and in addition to doing creative and classic mixology, I am pretty sure I've talked the owner into putting in an absinthe fountain. So, as we get rolling, I expect to slowly add to the selection of Absinthes and Patsis behind the bar.

Without being too commercial and self-promoting, I will leave the link for the bistro here.

If you would like more info, you can send me a private message. I don't want to self-promote and annoy people on the boards.

I remember Premier, but not Global and Passport.

When did Buffalo become so damn jet-set? ;)

I see you're located right practically next door to The Buffalo Brewpub.

If you've been there since the late eighties, I'm sorry I never discovered your bistro back in the day.

I'm sure it would have been a tastier experience.

Hello and a hearty welcome! It's great to hear that interest in absinthe is growing locally. If you need any suggestions on what to stock, you'll find plenty of excellent advice here @ the WS.

I had the opportunity to attend an Absinthe seminar and tasting in Rochester NY this week. Chris Carlsson of SpiritsReview.com was at 2 Vines restaurant and made a nice presentation, and brought his fountain to use at the bar.

I was inspired to re-create this evening in Buffalo and will be planning an event for an Absinthe night at Caffe Espresso, perhaps in October. I'll post back here as I have more info and a date.

And I quote an article posted on 5/20/11:

http://buffalochow.c..._could_sta.html

"The original formula was vilified, banned for nearly a century, and then legalized again only with changes. Strict limits were placed on the permissible levels of a chemical called thujone, which has been fingered as the potential troublemaker in the drink..."

"...there's nothing particularly positive to say about the $55 bottle of Kübler Absinthe Superieure we purchased from Premier locally."

:3869-sadbanana:

"It's made in Val-de-Travers, Switzerland, the birthplace of absinthe - and a region that's currently attempting to trademark the word 'absinthe' so that, like champagne, everything made outside the region needs to carry a different name. (This is apparently the reason France just legalized absinthe again; it has permitted the sale of absinthe under different names for a number of years, and doesn't want the Swiss to have exclusive naming rights to a drink that's most popularly associated with the French.)"

"Discussions of top brands take place on The Wormwood Society web site, though they typically skew towards pricey options - and they'll be correct that the extra investment is worthwhile."

:g:

"A less expensive option would be to order a Villars Dark Chocolate Bar with Absinthe Filling. They're outstanding. We bought one at Cheese Boutique in Toronto and have been anxious to return for another."

Edited by Alfred Jarry, 13 August 2011 - 07:06 PM.

"Anti-alcoholics are unfortunates in the grip of water, that terrible poison, so solvent and corrosive that out of all substances, it has been chosen for washing and scourings, and a drop of water, added to a clear liquid like Absinthe, muddies it."
