Cognac Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about buying a couple bottles of premium Cognac,

preferably close to the $100.00 range, but willing to go up to $150.00.

My 2 top contenders so far are:

Courvoisier "Imperial" XO

Hennessy XO

Which of these 2 would you consider to be best?

I have also been told that Martell Cordon Bleu and A.E. Dor are excellent.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hennessy-strong personality, especially VSOP and XO, Martell-delicate personality, Medaillon is very interesting, Courvoisier-a bit watery. I would take Hennessy-still, a traditional choice, although VS has decreased in quality within recent times.

Thanks!!

DUNY is currently charging $163.99 per 750 ml bottle of Hennessy XO.

DUNY also has Courvoisier "Imperial" XO for $129.99 and Martell XO for $119.99.

Free Shipping on orders over $99.00.

But first I want to check the local ABC store here to see if I can get a better price.

Every time I've considered spending that much on Cognac I've always wound up buying 3 bottles of good Whiskey instead. I do ogle the bottles of Louis XIII at BevMo occasionally though, just for fun!

The Martell Extra is definitely way beyond my price range of $100.00 to $150.00.

But it sure looks good.

I am also interested in some top shelf single barrel bourbon.

Well the most top shelf I usually get to is Booker's, which is not all that top! But I've heard good things about Hirsch if you can find it and have the coin to spend.

Yeah, I guess it all comes down to if I can get a better deal through DUNY

with free shipping, or locally. But locally will likely be less selections.

Old Forester has a couple of specialty bourbons that are great as well. The Birthday Bourbon and the Repeal Day whiskey are great. I definitely like the Hirsch too, but appreciate their rye more.

Clyde Mays makes a great Alabama whiskey too that is well within anyone's price range. Hard to find though.

OMG!

I just checked the price range, and couldn't believe the $420-$560.

The last bottle I bought ran me about $110.

Of course, that was in 1993, but still...

I liked the Alize Cognaq a lot. Not the fruity stuff, the cognaq. I have no experience with anything other than the Alize, Courvoisier and Hennessy. I just can't justify spending that much on something I digest I guess. I'll stick to the $50 and below range.

I've always been a fan of the Kelt cognacs, myself. They seem to have a balance and depth that seems to be less prevalent in the major brands.

At one point, I did a side-by-side (non-blind) tasting with the Remy Martin, Hennessy, and Courvoisier "Extra" cognacs (the $300-500 releases) and actually found myself enjoying the $150 Kelt X.O. more.

That being said, if you want an every-day drinker, the Kelt VSOP ($50-$60) is an amazing value. Definitely the best VSOP I've had. Much more round and balanced than, say, the Remy Martin. It's night and day.

Also, not sure if you've tried, but if you're into the more nutty flavors, it's definitely worth picking up some Armagnac as well. DUNY has some excellent bottles for around $100, particularly the vintage releases.

I love Hine rare vsop.

For bourbon my heart lies with Pappy Van Winlke's 20yr

For everyday bourbon Wiliam Larue Weller is hard to beat, but still pricey.

I haven't had much experience with many cognacs but I had Remy XO in vegas and it was superb. I believe the price is exactly $100.
