Hey gang!

Well, the upgrade went pretty smoothly and nothing broke (as far as i know) except that it looks like we lost member profile photos and some permissions settings. The new max on photos will be 200w x 300h and 100k.

The new skin may take a bit of time to finish; so you're stuck with this one for a little while longer. Maybe a few days, maybe not.

A few important things:

Profiles now have a "sidebar comments" section where you can tease and harass one another. Woo hoo. Just like MySpace. You can set the moderation so that comments must be approved by you before they appear. You can also choose not to display them at all.

You can show the last 0, 3, 5, or 10 comments on your profile and the last 0, 3, 5, or 10 visitors to your profile. That way you know who your stalkers are.

If you had a "contacts" list in your personal control panel, i.e., saved usernames handy for PMs, they are now your "friends" and you can show 0, 3, 5, or 10 in the sidebar in your profile. You can have mutual friends if someone "friends" you back.

Profiles will show your last 5 posts and the last 5 topics you started, subject to the viewing permissions of the viewer, i.e. a non-registered guest can't see posts or topics in members-only sections, they will see the last five public-viewable topics/posts.

These options can all be changed or disabled in your profile where it says

Topics | Posts | Comments | Friends | Settings

Avatars will be reduced from 150x150 down to 100x100. This will help save a lot of bandwidth believe it or not. I should be able to do this automatically.

File size and bandwidth have finally become an issue and we're very close to our limit on storage space, so if you're going to post an image or file, please use an image-hosting site such as flickr. It'll help a lot. Much thanks to those of you who are already doing this. I plan on moving the whole site to a new server in the coming months and this will cease to be an issue.

Your board settings, as before, can be edited in My Controls. The possible "Number of posts to show for each topic page" and "Number of topics to show for each forum page" has been increased to 100.

If you see anything amiss, broken, dead or otherwise dysfunctional (besides other members) please comment here.

Have fun!

H, is it possible to permanently set the side panel toggle to off?

There's a weird thing with how the board shows the time. I don't know if it has to do with the time change, but for me the board alternates between correct and one hour early. Specifically, I might see a post on the main board page that has 3:17 written next to it, which is correct. But if I hit reload it comes up as 2:17. It'll switch back and forth each time I hit reload.

How very puerile, and totally undignified.

You can rest assured that I, for one, will never stoop to using such a feature.

So there, Vlad!

Yes, I'm Krinkles the Clown on an absinthe a beer bender.

You got a problem with that?

Hiram, when adding a new contact to the PM list in the old software, there was a blank field where you could add a short note about the contact. (I usually made note of the person's real name.)

Have we lost that field?

I would appear so. What a dumb feature to eliminate. I'll look around some more and see if it's there somewhere to be turned on.

H, is it possible to permanently set the side panel toggle to off?

When I toggle mine off, it stays off. Does yours come back when you refresh or log out?

There's a weird thing with how the board shows the time.

Is it still doing this?

The sidebar now stays permanently hidden once toggled.

Thanks, Hiram. Not remembering anyone's name isn't the end of the world — I'll just call everyone "youngster".

While we're at it, I've been getting e-mails saying "So-and-so has successfully added you as a friend."

Is the "Friends List" identical to the old list of PM contacts?
What are "Mutual friends"?

Thanks.

I've noticed this throughout the weekend, too.

What are "Mutual friends"?

They are people who have added you to their friends list, and you have added to yours.

FYI, in your settings/preferences area, you can turn off those notifications if you prefer.

Thanks, Shab.

Out of 30 people on my "Friends List," only 5 are "Mutual Friends."

Guess I won't be running for homecoming queen after all.

This thing has so many new toys, I can't figure out how to use them all! I didn't even notice the mutual friends thing until you mentioned it, Brooks. I fear it's like most new fangled contraptions: by the time I figure how to program it, my VCR will be obsolete anyway. Cell phone? I'm still trying to pick a "handle" for my CB radio.

I hear ya, T. I never figured out how to program my VCR either, and now it's too late. I do have a cell phone, but hating phones in general, I never turn it on.

So, um........how many "Mutual Friends" do you have? (Maybe if I turned on my phone, I'd have more friends.)

I'm not terribly fond of the whole "friends list" concept, I liked "Contacts" better. I think I'll see if I can change it.

You're just saying that to coax me back from the window ledge where, starved for friendship, I stand poised to jump. It's a sweet gesture, Hiram, but I'm afraid you're tooooooo

I agree. It feels a little too much like a "My Face" page.

That's great, My Face! I agree though, somehow the concept just struck me wrong. Maybe I'm being over sensitive.

Exactly. It was a practical tool, now it's a social networking gimmick. I'm turning mine off.

But you're still all my friends!
