Board Upgrade & Remodel!
Well folks, it's (way past) time to upgrade the forum software. We've been running v2.1.7 for too long and the current version, v2.3.4, is more stable, faster, more secure and much nicer to use, once you get used to it. It's not all that different really.

The main thing that's kept me from upgrading is that the "skin" doesn't automatically fit the new board, so I'll have to make a new one. I can't do that until I install the new board version. That means you'll be dealing with the remodel while it's in progress. Not to worry, it's entirely cosmetic. Weird color combos, buttons not matching, etc. The alternative is to take down the site for a few days instead of a couple hours.

The first thing you'll notice as it emerges is that the new forum skin won't look like the old (current) one or the web site. That's because I'm remodeling the web site too. I'll be adding a few new features there, not the least of which is...

Venue Reviews!
This is Shabba's brainchild. You may notice that there's a new forum section in the Bistro called Absinthe Around the World. Shabba has scoured the threads here and gathered much of the information on where to go in the real world to buy absinthe, whether off the shelf or in a bar or restaurant. This would be the place for future contributions of this kind.

In addition, we'll be creating a new section on the web site for reviewing and rating these places. It'll be a much simpler rating system, scoring things like selection, service (preparation) expertise, cocktail menus, food, and overall ambiance. We'll be providing educational materials to bars as well and letting them know about WS and our efforts and the reasoning behind our values and criteria. Hopefully this will encourage the majority of better places to get with the program.

Registration Process
Not a lot has changed in this area since the WS forums opened over three years ago, in spite of the fact that membership has exploded over the last two years and we're no longer a small, local phenomenon. We'll be expanding the application and streamlining the process so that people will be more easily informed of the FAQ and Terms of Service. I'll be re-writing the registration page and adding some clauses which will hopefully re-direct those few who really have no intention to contribute positively to our community.

All of these changes have to do with meeting the need for increased professionalism on the part of WS as well as making the online user experience easier and more pleasant, and increasing security (protection from script exploits). Please excuse our dust over the next couple of weeks!

Cheers,

Don't worry, when hiccups occur, it won't be nearly as silent :)

Heh heh. I for one am excited to see the new design. I love the idea of the reviews for local establishments as well.

And damn, the city guide thing... That's some cool stuff! B)

Hey! I've been busy. We drove to Missoula, did not see ShaiHulud and Pensive but I bought a bottle 18 year old Sazerac. Lemme finish this delicious Sazerac and I'm sure I'll have something incomprehensible to say.

This place is no longer fun.

I won't... :hysterical2:

Oh, sorry, I was busy stamping out that awful cascading echo.

The changes sound really promising, H, particularly the venue reviews!

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!

(I forgot Board Members could view the board when it was offline)

This blue & grey skin is temporary until I get the new one tweaked into shape.

In the meantime, have fun exploring the new features (have a look at profiles). Please report dead links or non-functional items.

Thanks!

No issues today. I found out that if I log in on my home computer, then log in at work, when I get back home, it prompts me to log in again. Same thing at FV. That may be a new security thing.

Quite possible. Mthuilli, do you know if you have a static or dynamic IP? I've changed a couple settings I think may be responsible.

RE: searches.

Is there a way to get the same type of search results as we used to have?

Now, when I type in a search, it brings up the thread that contains the criteria, but not the individual posts. That gets rather cumbersom when you do a search and a thread like 'What are you drinking tonight' comes up and you have to click through hundreds of pages to find the post you were looking for.

When you click on the search button at the top right, click on "More Search Options" in the little window it brings up. On the next page there's an option for displaying the results as posts at the bottom right.
