Your Top Ten Commercial Absinthes

Recommended Posts

Crazy how your taste can change over time. Just had some Edouard last night with a friend and I swear it tasted better than I remember it. I just listed my preference of Jades the other day with the 1901 ahead of the Eddie, but I've gotta reverse that now.

At the present time:

1. Belle Amie

2. Jade Nouvelle-Orleans

3. L'Italienne

4. La Coquette

5. Marteau (Matter)

6. Roquette 1797

7. Vieux Carre

8. Jade Edouard

9. VdF

10. Jade PF1901

Numbers 3-6 are so close, it could vary from day to day.

But a nice 'un it twas.

And it'll be produced at a truly artisanal output level when it does go commercial, so let's say it almost qualifies already. :)

I'm aiming for more of a friendly taunting :wave2: that was irresistible :poke: but also admittedly tinged with a bit of absinthe envy.

I'll try to be serious for a second, but this top 10 thing gets more difficult the more great absinthes that I try.

1. L'Itallienne

2. Marteau Belle Epoque

3. Leopold Batch 14

4. Jade VS, ED, 1901

5. Helfrich Verte

6. Marteau Verte Classique, Balance, Twin Tec, Duplais Verte

7. Clandestine, La P'tite

8. Maitresse Rouge

9. Vieux Pontarlier, Blanchette

10. Obsello

Interchangeable, especially 1-5.

6. Wanner La Fée de la Rade

7. Wanner La Fée Verte

Oh hell, you're doing so much better than I could hope to do.

Trying to put together my Top Ten would break my little head.

Uh. Marteau.

Um, 1901.

Oh dear, Eddy? NO?

Maybe, CLB? Er, Duplais?

Blanchette, yet?

See, I'm stuck already. Depending upon my mood, I might be able to pick out my top five but it'd probably change the next day. It's not that I'm fickle, I just like them (almost) all!

Yeah, me too! I like some more than others, but I like a lot of them each for their unique qualities.

Some day I will post my list in this thread, only when I sit down at my desk with adequate provisions to sustain life for a while!

Ok, here's an honest 10, once again somewhat variable on the ranking. There's some excellent blanches that didn't make the list, but I do love them vertes. If I was collecting 10 for desert island exile, I'd definitely make sure to bring some Clandestine and maybe some La P'Tite or Blanchette.

1. L'Itallienne

2. Marteau Belle Epoque

3. Leopold Batch 14

4. Jade VS

5. Helfrich Verte

6. Jade Ed

7. Jade PF1901

8. Marteau Verte Classique

9. Maitresse Rouge

10. Duplais Balance

Even the blanches...

Whatever happened to Elixer du Payes de Fee? Damn, that was a tasty little beverage! I only noticed, it's no longer carried by Marcus.

Fuck. Better order some Ike before it disappears, too. Ooooo! Ike is on my top ten!!!

Which brings up, how many "stashed" protos from Marcus could we come up with? I know I have three bottles stashed...somewhere.

Thanks so much. Remember, it's the only absinthe to be on the market that's "artificially colored with all natural herbs".

I'm still fighting the use of the word "artificial". I guess if I changed my formula to say I "infuse" the herbs in the distillate they'd be happy, but they haven't said that's what they want. They haven't said I can't say "colored with herbs", even though that's what everyone does; except for those that use real artificial colors. But I suspect that having a statement such as "colored with herbs" on absinthe products regardless of how the manufacturer described it in their formula scare them as a step in the direction of actually defining absinthe, which they don't officially recognize as existing (it's a distilled spirits specialty).
