Actually, I'm on a non-sushi diet (avoiding rice) and I'd go broke if I went out once a week for sashimi because when I do I'm liable to consume $35 worth - no lie. And EXTRA wasabi for me.

A sushi dinner here will easily set you back $50-75. And that's not even in the best places like Makoto.

Extra wasabi for me as well. If you can find it, try a good slab of toro. It is exquisite. Absolutely melts in your mouth.

There are plenty of sushi dishes that are cooked. Just need to find the right ones. Many are quite delicious.

I take my youngest son (he is 13) out to dinner every Thursday night - sushi at least once a month and it almost always breaks $100...Our favorite is Aji sashimi- that lovely little spanish mackerel - with a spicy ginger dipping sauce. They fry the bones in tempura to finish up. Oh so good!

Luckily, I live in the land of sushi. Yes, there are plenty of expensive nice places to go - but where we go Friday nights, two of us get stuffed and each have a large Japanese beer for $40.

I really love certain kinds of sushi. Raw tuna is great.

When I was in Japan in 2001 I ordered raw prawns and I couldn't really eat those. They were just massive. I ended up picking off my friend's tuna plate.

As for a certain type of cuisine - how can anyone pick just one?? I love it all! Mexican, Italian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese - I don't care. I'm just not too fond of Filipino because they like cooking eggs with chicks inside and for some reason that really grosses me out.
Some people are like slinkies...
they aren't good for much, but they make you smile when you push them down the stairs.

Many, not all, sushi joints I go to have a VERY limited menu for people on a no-sushi diet. I am offended by the lack of variety. In most eateries there is something for everyone.

At sushi restaurants, if you do not eat sushi, you're screwed! You end up with a small teryaki chicken skewer appetizer. I complain the entire time.

I do find myself intrigued when I watch people eat it. It's like watching a disgusting porno.

Yeah, Zzzz. I know what you mean. I think some people eat it to be on the trendy sushi bandwagon.

Others eat it because they enjoy the taste. THOSE people are the weirdos. :tongue:

I can't say much about sushi. I haven't tried it, yet, but it looks very good. I enjoy seafood but so far most of it has been cooked. I'd be willing to give it a go in NO with a bit of guidance from my peers. Some of your discriptions have me looking forward to trying it. Can it be worse than KOSG?

Some folks may cringe each time I use the term "Booze" regarding these high quality drinks.
I mean no offense. There are bottles of extraordinary booze out there. I've tasted a few. Relax.

I enjoyed "Ender's Game" and a couple other Orson Scott Card novels.

But, the man has a website, where he publishes his opinions on politics and the world.

Turns out we disagree so radically that I can't even consider purchasing another of his books.

Sorry to drag this tangent back up, but I'm compelled to add another 2¢. I've read a little of Card's work and is it generally readable. But... Several years ago he was contributing book reviews to the magazine "Fantasy and Science Fiction" and absolutely trashed a novel by Michael Bishop titled "The Secret Ascension". Despite his grudging recognition of its literary merit and entertainment value, he chose to rant and rave about his political disagreement with the author (or at least his disdain for the subject and characters). My opinion of his talent took a serious nosedive. Interestingly, F&SF published Bishop's reply to the Card review, which thoroughly rebuked Card. Justifiable so, IMHO. Note, I am not pushing any particular political position here, just commenting on how easy it is to let personal (political) opinions intrude at the wrong time and place... Even for professionals.

As for sushi, as long as it has no Anasakis hiding in it, bring it on!

Being a good native Oklahoman, I was terrified of sushi until about 10 years ago, when some friends decided I'd been out of the heartland for long enough and showed me the light. Haven't looked back.

Now, my kids are bonkers for it--which is a big deal, because they're both under 7, become righteously indignant if they're served anything even slightly outside their culinary comfort zone, and raise such a holy ruckus if their food is tainted with a fleck of pepper that I'm afraid the neighbors are going to call child protective services on us one day. Plop a futomaki or spicy tuna roll in front of them, though, and you better keep your fingers out of the way.

Well - they ARE sushi joints. That's like going to McDonald's and getting annoyed there isn't enough of a low-fat vegan menu or going to Taco Bell and being annoyed they don't have Thai options. :p

I think I could limit myself to only Thai food if I had to.

Going back to cute and edible animals, anyone tried Guinea Pig? I hear they're popular south of the equator. I'd try one, mainly since I never had one as a pet.

I don't like eating sushi either but some of it looks very nice!

A little technological fix to a spiritual problem.

Actually saw a story recently that that is exactly how they're entering the market in India. Burgerless Mickey D's, believe it or not.

McD must have changed their strategy for India since I lived there. Those days it was the trendiest thing to do in Delhi to go eat their lamb burgers.

What you need to do is find a good Japanese restaurant, instead of just a sushi house. Most (at least around here) have extensive menus, then also have an a la carte sushi menu alongside it. We have a HUGE asian population in the DC area, so there must be hundreds of sushi, Japanese, Thai, Philipino, Chinese, Korean BBQ, Mongolian BBQ, etc etc. I'm in heaven! :cheers:

Without knowing much about your preferences, here are some options:

OK, so to start with, here’s some ‘sushi’ options that don’t include raw fish.

Nigiri (a piece of whatever is listed below on top of rice)

Ebi is cooked shrimp (stay away from Ama Ebi which is raw shrimp)
Unagi – eel (don’t knock it till you you try it.)
Tamago is cooked egg
Tako is cooked octopus

Maki (a roll comprised of rice with the below ingredient)

Note: there are many rolls named after cities and such that are regional, so just check the menu for the ingredients.
California Roll (crab and avocado)
Boston Roll (crab and cucumber)
Tempura maki (battered and fried ingredient like shrimp, veggies, etc)
Futomaki (various veggies and cooked egg)
Oshinko (pickled radish)

Of the below pic, on 3 of the 8 groups are raw

OK, here’s other things you’ll see on the menu that you can get – again, there are many variations of the below (i.e. beef, chicken, seafood, etc etc.)

Edamame (salted boiled or steamed soy beans)
Oshinko (various pickled veggies)
Yakitori (general name for skewered and broiled meats ie chicken yakitori)
Negima Yaki (thin sliced beef wrapped around a green onion and broiled)
They have the same with asparagus, mushroom, etc etc)
Sunomono (one of my favorite appetizers) – crab, shrimp, etc with cucumber and other veggies in a sweet vinegar sauce.
Agedashi Tofu – battered and deep fried cubes of tofu in an unbelievably tasty sauce
Tempura – any ingredient battered and deep fried
Lots of Teriyaki dishes obviously
Donburi dishes are all charbroiled or otherwise cooked, served over rise
Sukiyaki dishes are cooked and served in a hot pot
Bento boxes – many are cooked. served with tempura, soup, salad, and/or rice
Udon – noodles typically in soup. All ingredients are cooked

This is probably the wrong place for this but it's one of my favorite things to eat & raw.


Ahi tuna cut into 1/2" cubes - 1 1/2 lbs
Lime juice - 1/2 cup
Coconut milk - 1/4 cup
Cucumber peeled cut into 1/2" cubes - 1/2
Tomato diced - 1
Scallions chopped - 3 to 4
Kosher or sea salt - big pinch
Fresh ground pepper - pinch

Just mix it up & let sit 20 minutes then eat. You do want Sushi grade tuna for this.


I love Sushi & Sashimi.

It does cook on the outside, the good thing is you can't wreck (by overcooking) the fish.

I prefer not to eat items that could give me ecoli, staph or parasites embedded in the flesh. I don't care about the trendy bandwagon; I care about my health. I want my food cooked. What will I eat raw? Fruits and vegetables only.

You can get any of those problems from most any restaurant.

To be completely honest, you stand as much chance of getting those things from food from your refrigerator as you do from a good quality sushi restaurant.

Also, most of the restaurant food poisoning outbreaks in the U.S. in the past few years have been due to tainted veggies. Remember the Don Pablos incident recently? Yup, it was veggies.

I've been eating sushi probably twice a week since I moved down here to DC (seven years ago) from typically 5 different restaurants. Not once have I had any problems. However, in the same time frame, I've gotten several cases of food poisoning from regular american restaurants that supposedly overcook everything.

Sushi places are some of the most strictly controlled in the food business, since they have such a high rate of using raw seafood. Before you order, do a quick check. Are there more Asians than non-Asians working there and eating there? (That's not meant to be a bigoted remark) If so, that's a good indication that it's good quality, and that the local Asian population approves.

Once you've ordered, do another quick check. Does the sushi smell fishy? If so, you might not want to eat it. Is it cold to the touch? If so, that means the countertop units are functioning well and keeping the fish at a good temperature.
