do you know why this is called Hookak in USA and most of other countries it is called Nargile (or Narghile) ? Is there any bad connotation for the word Nargile in USA ?

It were a good time. I love my new hookah. In fact, I'm going to do some lemon shisha tomorrow morning with bloody marys while we watch the STL Marathon. I'm a hookah addict.

Does anybody know how long shisha lasts? months? years?

EDIT: A quick Google search found me the answer (about 2 years) Guess I should throw this 7 year old stuff away. Egyptian no-name stuff probably wasn't much good to start off with anyways..

'Hookah' is the English spelling from the Indian word 'huka'. It's just the word that took hold here in the states. Other places it's called 'narghile', 'gheyloon' and other names. To make things even more fun, in the West, the tobacco is called shisha, in the Middle East, 'shisha' refers to the pipe and the tobacco has names like 'moessel' and 'tombeik' depending on style.
It just depends on what patch of earth you happen to be standing on at the time.

If you're not able to easily procure a huka look for Middle Eastern or Greek cafes. I know the place I go to to grab gyros at sells hukas and shisha, and I'm in red-neck-istan here...

Back on topic: I have an old 60s-era Turkish narghile, but unfortunately it's in sad shape. Thanks for the link Shabba.

I haven't posted in this thread since then, but last year I finally broke down and bought a new hookah and a dozen flavors of shisha. My clear favorite is Al Fakher Cinnamon, followed closely by Jewels Double Apple. I have several other brands of double apple, and I was amused that the Al Fakher has a very distinct anise note to it.

I never did refurbish the antique Turkish hookah I have, but I've been pretty busy. ;)

I busted out my hookah last weekend. I did Hydro herbal raspberry shisha with a touch of lemon shisha and blackberry flavored vodka in the base. The combination produced a very satisfying berrylicious experience. I use one of the smaller Mya hookahs and I really enjoy it.

And a fine hookah it is! We'll have to log more hours on it.

My clear favorite is Al Fakher Cinnamon, followed closely by Jewels Double Apple. I have several other brands of double apple, and I was amused that the Al Fakher has a very distinct anise note to it.

I go over to the workers tent to smoke here every night. Al Fakher is pretty much the only brand, and the flavors we burn through the most are the two apple and the orange. Every now and then the mint gum flavor. I used to really like the two apple, but the Al Fakher inclusion of a very robust anise flavor turns me off, oddly enough. It's almost like clove. I prefer my apples to taste of apple. I prefer my anise distilled with wormwood. But in all honesty, whatever's in the bowl is what I'll smoke. Learning to sit like the locals has still not become any easier though.

I've been pretty busy. ;)

Our hookah broke last fall; ‘hand made in Egypt’ my ass. The base grommet didn’t fit right, the stem/hose grommet that held the hose to the shaft flexed and wasn’t air-tight, and the bowl was way too small. We tossed it after my attempt to solder, tape, fix, etc.

I am still looking for a decent, larger hookah that is quality made, and not produced in china en-masse.

Bingo. Apparently nothing anywhere, of any make or origin is quality anymore*.

Don't they just sit cross-legged? Or do they do that crouchy, hunkering thing?

Now, curious if anyone here has had a glass with their hookah, and which flavors of mu'assel might work best with a good absinthe in your opinions? :D

I'm still unsure myself, it would depend largely upon the absinthe of course. Whether one would want a fruit flavor or something bolder. I'm thinking maybe mint would do justice to most good brands, eh?

Most the two apple products, like the one from Al Fakher, use anise. I would think that's a nice companion. I tend not to smoke and drink at the same time though, as it makes a much harder time to taste nuances. We actually smoked the hookah and drank absinthe this past summer at the Ridge.

That was the first tobacco I enjoyed in over 20 years. It was weird, delicious and as an ex-cigarette addict, a little frightening. I'm looking forward to the next opportunity with both excitement and apprehension.

Apple eh? sounds good. I wouldn't consider doing them at the same time but one and then the other might be a nice compliment. I know that when it comes to food, the hookah should always be a "dessert." so to speak.

Welcome to the legion Joe ;D the day I turned 18 I brought my parents with me to the lounge and we had Evolution Tea's peach flavor.
It just seems right to me, that two things of such beauty and nuance go together.

Yep, like bacon wrapped bacon. Now, that be some good grazin'.

I know, I derailed but I'll bring it back.

I haven't smoked anything since about 1980. My kids bring their hookah when they come down for the weekend though. They seem to enjoy the hookah and what ever beverage they may find around here.

See, all better.
