Absinthe In Song Lyrics: Share 'Em If You Got 'Em!

Recommended Posts

Hiram ok'd the topic, and I couldn't find one by searching, so....

Mary Gauthier mentions Absinthe in her song Wheel Inside The Wheel:

Flambeau dancers light the walkway to Jean Pierre's

There's a party tonight and all the girls are gonna be there

Sipping wormwood concoctions, drinking absinthe and talking trash

It's a red carpet, black tie, all night, celestial bash

Jimmy Buffett has covered this song in his most recent CD, Take The Weather With You.

Absinthe Frappè

From the 1904 Broadway comic operetta 'It Happened In Nordland'

Music by Victor Herbert (founder of ASCAP)

Lyrics by Glen MacDonough.

Sung by Prince George of Nebula and Chorus

When Life seems grey and dark the dawn

And you are through,

There is, they say, on such a morn

One thing to do:

Rise up and ring, a bell-boy call

To you straight-way,

And bid him bring a cold and tall

Absinthe frappè!

It will free you first from the burning thirst

That is born of a night of the bowl,

Like a sun 'twill rise through the inky skies

That so heavily hang o'er your soul.

At the first cool sip on your fevered lip

You determine to live through the day,

Life's again worthwhile as with a dawning smile

You imbibe your absinthe frappè.

The deed is done so waste no woe o'er yestereen.

Nor swear to shun a year or so the festive scene.

Remorse will pass, despair will fade with speed away

Before a glass of rightly made absinthe frappè!

As far as I can ascertain, this may be the first time the complete lyrics have appeared on the internet. Usually only the last half is quoted.

Here is the tune, recorded by Victor Herbert and his orchestra, released in 1909. Absinthe Frappé runs from 01:50 to 03:11.

The Damned Absinthe Lyrics

"I can take all of your dreams

Transform the way you feel

Make life a little easier

For you to face your fears

As the evening starts to crawl

Dark shadows on the walls

Are dancing and inviting you

To come and taste it all

If you want to take a chance

Seduction's in a glass

Taking you to another place

Come taste this lunacy

Be blinded by the green faerie

Creeping out of your glass

Into your mind

Then you can really see

I can take all of your fears

Transform the way you feel

Welcome to the spirit world

Where all your dreams are real

If you want to take a chance

Seduction's in a glass

Taking you to another place

As the evening starts to crawl

Dark shadows on the walls

Are dancing and inviting you

To come and taste it all

I can take all of your fears

Transform the way you feel

Welcome to the spirit world

Where all your dreams are real

If you want to take a chance

Seduction's in a glass

Taking you to another place

And now our trip to wonderland

Has finally come to an end

And if you're not completely mad...

I will be your best friend"

Minus the Bear- "Absinthe Party At The Fly Honey Warehouse"

Hey, lets cross the sea

and get some culture.

Red wine with every meal

and absinthe after dinner.

We'd look good side by side

walking back to the hotel.

We've got to get something

to eat and to drink yeah,

and find a place to stay

that's not far off the main way-

we've got to plan our day;

Rodan and the Orsay.

and find a way to cram it all in

before we drink hard again.

Let's get a bottle and drink alone tonight

'This light looks good on you,'

morning came early.

Sitting on a park bench

that's older than my country.

Two star hotel

near St. Germain.

Two star hotel

where the stars don't mean anything.

E-Bow the Letter (R.E.M.):

"Look up. What do you see? All of you and all of me, fluorescent and starry, some of them they surprise. busride. I went to write this, 4 a.m., this letter. Fields of poppies, little pearls. All the boys and all the girls--sweet-toothed, each and every one a little scary. I said your name. I wore it like a badge of teenage film stars, hash bars, cherry mash and tin foil tiaras. Dreaming of Maria Callas, whoever she is. This fame thing, I don't get it. I wrapped my hand in plastic to try to look through it. Maybelline eyes and girl-as-boy moves. I can take you far. This star thing, I don't get it. [i'll take you over. I'll take you there.] Aluminum, it tastes like fear. Adrenaline, it pulls us near. Will you live to 83? Will you ever welcome me, will you show me something that nobody else has seen? Smoke it, drink. Here comes the flood, anything to thin the blood. These corrosives do their magic slowly, and sweet. Phone, eat it, drink. Just another chink, cuts and dents they catch the light. Aluminum, the weakest link. I don't want to disappoint you. I'm not here to anoint you. I would lick your feet but is that the sickest move, I wear my own crown, and sadness, and sorrow, and who'd of thought tomorrow could be so strange? My loss. And here we go again. [i'll take you over. I'll take you there.] Aluminium, it tastes like fear. Adrenaline, it pulls us near. It tastes like fear. It pulls us near. Look up. What do you see? All of you and all of me, flourescent and starry, some of them they surprise. I can't look it in the eyes. Seconal, spanish fly, absinthe, kerosene, cherry-flavored neck and collar. I can smell the sorrow on your breath. The sweat, victory and sorrow. This smell thing, I got it. [i'll take you over. I'll take you there.] Aluminum, it tastes like fear. Adrenaline, it pulls us near. It tastes like fear. It pulls us near. It tastes like fear. It pulls us near."

Cradle Of Filth - Absinthe With Faust Song Lyrics from "Nymphetamine [special Edition] (2005)

"Pour the emerald wine

Into crystal glasses

We will touch the divine

Through kisses catharsis

Let us pitch to the seven-year itch

Of the ultra-decadent

To a tainted world and the painted girls

That our fantasies spent

Tripping through boudoirs laced with opiate themes

Sipping the bizarre, tasting copious dreams

A toast to those most sacrilegious of days

Where for every whim won

One soon repays

We touched the stars

That now laugh from afar

At we, the damned

The damned

The damned

The damned

We have spent our time

Drenched in opulent splendour

But when midnight chimes

Will gilded souls surrender?

Let us drink on the giddying brink

Of pools of excrement

All manner of shit for the glamour and glitz

Mephistopheles lent

I remember the night as if it were engraved

A bright marble bridge stretched across the dark waves

To the shore from the moon and by her grace

Came that erudite stranger

That fucker

He was a predator, creditor cold

Our blood was shone on the yellowing scroll

And all that glittered was not gold

But we wanted everything

And for it all lost our souls

Come my friend, to fate lets raise

Two finger shots at this our last soiree

For tomorrow I fear

Swoops all too deadly near

This precipitous weir to Hells high gate

We touched the stars

That now laugh from afar

At we, the damned

The damned

The damned

The damned

He was a predator, creditor cold

Our blood was shoved on the yellowing scroll

And all that glittered was not gold

But we wanted everything

And for it all lost our souls

Our souls

For it all lost our souls

Our souls "

And Another one:

In Paris

Music by Elton John

Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

Written for the Broadway musical "Lestat"

Transcribed from Elton's demo version

"Listen to me, let me speak of

Wondrous works of art

That dwell within that fabled city

Its architecture fills my heart

Let me tell you I have seen

Where great ideas are born

Illuminating all the darkness

In the corners of the world

Ask of me, I will tell you

Let your conscience be your guide

There's nothing but a hellhole here

While Paris waits, your virgin bride

Is it true, were you once a pupil

Of the great Mozart

It's true, but I was hopeless then

Clumsy as a horse and cart

Could it be I dreamt so long

To act upon the stage and sing

The footlights smoking at my feet

As curtains rise like velvet wings

Come with me, let me show you

The opera and the comedy

The Latin Quarter where the girls

Are raven haired and fancy free

you'll play the dashing rogues

And infiltrate the grand salons

And walk in wonder through the Louvre

Across the Seine to the Sorbonne

In cafes we will feed our heads

With absinthe and philosophy

Engage the students of Voltaire

And damn the aristocracy

chorus:

In Paris the bells of Notre Dame ring out

In Paris we'll trade our soft voices for shout

I'll not rest until the ramparts of that city

Stand before us bright and clear

Penniless in Paris is better than the life we're leading here

In Paris we'll search for fame

In Paris we'll be born again

And though the streets aren't paved with gold

In Paris we'll put our trust

For Paris, she was made for us

Paris, she was made for us

In Paris we will liberate our souls

I've heard that there's infernal noise

The stench and cut-throats out to rob

The hungry crowds that fill the street

Where anarchy consumes the mob

And so there is, and in this life

There's always two sides to a coin

There's no adventure without danger

It's lions not sheep we're off to join

We'll rent a room above the din

Somewhere along the Boulevard

And find employment on the stage

The unwashed mass we'll disregard

And what of Marie Antoinette

She dances at the Palais Royal

Along with all the common folk

I hear they call her 'Louis Whore'

My friend the Monarchian God

Are out of touch and out of vogue

But can men live without belief

Change is coming so I'm told

Fashion there is everything

But still there is a call to science

It's time of reason, not suspicion

All nations worldwide look to France

And bright you'll shine, a brand new star

And I will play the violin

We'll take the city by the throat

And revel in it's glorious sin

Ring us wine us, raise a toast

To the eightteenth century man

We are the vintage of an era

Golden sons of Abraham

[repeat chorus]"

I four

From Dreamchild, La Feé Verte:

Come, embrace La Feé Verte - she's everywhere

Glowing in the glass...if you dare

Sinuously swaying in the air

Always out of reach, she glimmers near

Come, embrace La Feé Verte

Absinthe tinted dreams

Thoughts are adrift in a sea of green

Wormwood underneath

Sweetness a lure, hides a bite that's keen

La Feé Verte

La Feé Verte

Come, embrace La Feé Verte - she's everywhere...

Absinthe in your veins

You drift away from your life's debris

Cloudy in the glass

Yet with a sip, clearly you can see

La Feé Verte

La Feé Verte

It's better suited to being a bumper sticker in large size, and a forum signature in small size. To do as a t-shirt, I think it would be better with the glass in center, with Wormwood Society, etc., below the glass, and the It's Not Easy Being Green slogan in an arc above the glass. Sort of badge-shaped.

Just my opinion. It's a lovely design, Hiram.

I thought the bumper sticker idea was good but I don't do bumper stickers. The current WS design with that on it would be neat as well. Something fresh!

Dayem! It's easy for me to stray off topic. Sorry.

Opeth - "Harlequin Forest"

Into the trees

Past meadow grounds

And further away from my home

Baying behind me

I hear the hounds

Flock's chasing to find me alone

A trail of sickness

Leading to me

If I am haunted

Then you will see

Searching the darkness

And emptiness

I'm hiding away from the sun

Will never rest

Will never be at ease

All my matter's expired so I run

There falls another

Vapor hands released the blade

Insane regrets at the drop

Instruments of death before me

Lose all to save a little

At your peril it's justified

And dismiss your demons

As death becomes a jest

You are the laughing stock

Of the absinthe minded

Confessions stuck in your mouth

And long gone fevers reappear

Nocturnally helpless

And weak in the light

Depending on a prayer

Pacing deserted roads to find

A seed of hope

They are the trees

Rotten pulp inside and never well

Roots sucking, thieving from my source

Tired boughs reaching for the light

It is all false pretension

Harlequin forest

Awaiting redemption for a lifetime

As they die alone

With no one by their side

Are they forgiven?

Stark determination

Poisoning the soul

Unfettered beast inside

Claiming sovereign control

And now the woods are burning

Tearing life crops asunder

Useless blackened remains

Still pyre smoldering

The Damned Absinthe Lyrics

The Damned- Grave Disorder...

It's like they mixed Vanian's Gothic with Cpt's Punk.

I like about 50%...The goth side....

"Absinthe" & "Beauty of the Beast" are the best 2 in my eyes...

I thought the bumper sticker idea was good but I don't do bumper stickers.
Neither do I, not being a car-owner. It's one of an upcoming series of link banners for WS.

And coming soon to a T-shirt (hopefully) near you.

Beth Orton - "Absinthe"

Album: Comfort of Strangers

Label: Astralwerks

Catalog#: ASW 49847

Released: 2006

My love’s a star you only saw the traces of

What went before is not no more

It’s the embers of

People always catching names too late

And we’re all sorry there’s no time to make the change

I could hear rebellion rising

I could feel the stars aligning

I could see the way uprising

But i never did seem to find my way back home

My love’s a ball i threw to you

Once i was gone you caught it too

Love ignored erodes in time

Changes shape went and changed your mind

All i really needed was someone to take me home

Enough absence can crush a spirit to the bone

And i could feel rebellion rising

I could hear the stars aligning

I could see the way uprising

But i never did seem to find my way back home

No i never did seem to find my way back home

A Danish song by L.O.C.:

Yo, Jeg vil egentlig gerne sige undskyld

Absinthe

folk sir' at du vil gør'

Mig Blind

hende forskellige steder derhjemme

Absinthe

folk sir' du at vil gør

Mig Blind

sætter tankespil i gang i mit hoved, alle tanker gode

for hun er min so, hun hedder

2X

Absinthe

folk sir' du at vil gør

Mig Blind

Pejsen

Du min

Absinthe

Translation of the verse:

Absinthe

people tells me that you make

Me Happy

But they have never been where you take

Me To

So let us add some gazoline on the

Hearth

You my

Absinthe

If all of you guys drink a little bit more absinthe, and then regularly keep meeting the nice la Fée Verte, all languages on Earth will soon sound like your own mother language :-D On the other hand, I start to understand why Norway isn't taking part in any international music festivals...

Hehe, Bobbysocks :-D When I was 15 years old it seems like I focused more on those girls standing there singing, than the melody itself... BUT, yeah, that oldie was cuite a cool song :mbanana:

By the way, how are the absinthe rules in Sweden at the moment? Ooops, I promise to ask only once, since this is a discussion about lyrics. But, let's see. OK, I sing when I write this, and hope that's a good enough excuse
