My question is this: Is there anything that you can/should do if you have an open bottle that will not be touched for a few years? Outside of the usual upright, out of sunlight, and cool location that is. I ask because a close friend of mine who recently became interested in absinthe died two weeks ago. He had ordered a bottle of Ike and Jade Edouard; the Ike we opened for his 21st birthday and the Jade we each had a glass of a week later. Both bottles are still pretty full, especially the Jade. Anyways, I was talking to his younger brother tonight (he is 16) and he mentioned he'd like to save the bottles Joe had bought until he could drink them. I know ageing a sealed bottle is fine but will the fact that they have been opened pose any problems?

I can't offer further advice in regards to your question, but I would like to offer condolences on the loss of a good friend. Sad news and my heart reaches out to you.

It will age fine if correctly and tightly corked. Better seal them with any non-perfumed (neutral) wax you can find.
Really sad for your friend, he was so young, take care of the little brother, he will need all the love that his nearest and dearest can give him.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Keeping the bottles for his younger brother to enjoy sounds like a great way to honor your friend's memory.

to your friend.
As mentioned, if they are well corked they should age just fine, and will probably taste better in a couple years than today.

Reading your post did really hurt, Chris. My condolences.
As said above, I think opening those bottles later in life, and drinking to his brother's memory, will be a fine thing for him, knowing that this was something his brother did enjoy and had an interest in.

My very sincere condolences for your loss, Chris.
As for storage advice, it's been covered pretty well: dark, cool, upright.

Thank you everyone, very much, for the kind words. It does suck, and I don't know how else to say it. I'll be going over there in the next day or two and I'll make sure everything is sealed and corked well so that in a few years Clint and I can sit down with the same bottle of Jade Joe and I had. Thanks again everyone.

Perhaps, if you/we are still around in a few years, you will consider bringing this thread back? How poignant to hear of you re-opening those bottles. All good thoughts until then,

My condolences as well. It's hard when a close friend isn't there anylonger out of a sudden..
I was sampling 1.5 year old prototypes last night and have to say that they really were excellent. It's absolutly worth aging Absinthe. It turns smooth and mellow. Simply keep them cool in a dark place and make sure the bottles stand upright. That should do well.

Au contraire. I think life is too fair. It's us who think that we deserve better.

Why not pick an appropriate location and title, and start a thread with an opening paragraph inviting discussion?
Seems like a philosophical sundry to me.
